17 Satisfying Quitting Stories Reminding Us We Don’t Have to Take It

They say workers don’t leave their jobs; they leave managers.

A horrible boss can make or break a workplace, and some so-called leaders are so exceptionally awful that workers tell them off in spectacular fashion.

We eat up these quitting stories, reveling in the courage of workers who finally stood up and said they aren’t going to take it.

Want a triumphant win for the day?

You’re in luck. We scoured the internet, searching for the best quitting stories where workers gave a final, massive “F-U” to a horrible supervisor (who definitely deserved it!).

Grab your popcorn and enjoy the fabulous ways workers fight back.

No Schedule, No Worker

One worker quit before they even started working.

They interviewed for a position at a daycare facility, and all seemed well. The supervisor said they’d receive a text over the weekend with the hours for the week.

Naturally, the text never came, so they didn’t go to work. But at 10 am on Monday morning, the supervisor called asking them to come in at 11.

I love the response, which showed the boss that an employee’s time is, in fact, valuable outside of work.

They ignored the request to come in and simply asked for a real schedule. 0 Of course, it never came, but that didn’t stop the calls. They continued every day for a week, until the prospective worker had enough.

“I tell her I’ll stop in to get my check by the end of the week because she can’t respect my time and lied on the ad about being full-time,” the user stated, adding, “Also, I am not getting paid to be on call.”

We think everyone needs to value their own time like this user.

All the Employees Leave

Companies must take care of their employees, or they’ll soon find themselves without any.

One user shared that after they left an awful company, almost everyone else followed, including their previous manager and a few key developers.

The original company couldn’t function without these essential workers and soon went under.

Others commented that similar things happened at their companies. “That will teach them not to overwork their staff and underpay them,” said one.

We can only hope.

Where’s that Smell Coming from?

One Redditor shared a particularly nefarious going-away present they gave their boss.

“I taped a piece of fish to the back of his desk, which was up against a wall,” they said. The user added that it took nearly a month for the manager to find the source of the nasty smell.

Leaving a rotting fish to stink up a workspace is the ultimate diss.

We can’t help but wonder what the boss did to deserve such a devious revenge, but unfortunately, the Redditor didn’t say.

Not Showing Up to “Final” Shifts

Managers short on staff often expect former employees to cover. A lot of people shared their quitting stories, and reported that afterwards, the former boss called, asking them to cover a shift.

Of course, workers scoff at these ridiculous requests and leave the managers hanging at the essential shift.

These stories showcase two marks of a horrible boss: they don’t hire enough employees to cover shifts, and they’re so bad at leading that the employees they hire leave as quickly as possible.

However, I do feel bad for the shift managers at massive companies. They often don’t have the power to hire more staff and get blamed for stupid corporate policies they have no control over.

They could quit, too, though.

Ruining the Weekend

One user shared that they gave an employer extra time after quitting, only to be strung along.

“I quit. They begged so I agreed to stay while they hired someone for me to train up,” they shared. The user said that the company ignored the promise and didn’t follow through on hiring a replacement.

After months of asking and waiting, they quit on a Friday night without warning.

“I guarantee that ruined several people’s weekends – probably right up to the CIO level since he was the one who convinced me to stay on, “while they hired a replacement,” they added.

Bye Bye Keys

A construction superintendent had had enough of horrible bosses who refused to implement OSHA safety standards and constantly threw them under the bus for their failures.

“One evening, on a whim – I restored my laptop, tablet, and phone to factory settings,” they shared. Then, after sending a goodbye nastygram, they “tossed the keys into a retention pond.”

The user shared they received an offer to work for a different company within four hours and never looked back.

We wonder if the old boss ever found the keys.

Exposing Personal Secrets

One worker was so fed up with the horrible treatment from their boss that they blew up her personal life on the way out the door.

The user shared that they knew their boss was working towards leaving her husband, “Because I found it on a numbered to-do list on top of her desk.”

Weird that she’d leave it out in the open, but the employee took the opportunity to gather the evidence, taking a photo of the note.

After being mistreated for the last time, “I sent the photo to her husband, copied her, and wrote, ‘For your records’ in the subject line,” the user shared.

This quitting story ended a bit too soon – we’re dying to know the result.

Refusing to Train

Bosses do everything possible to squeeze more from workers while paying them less.

One Redditor shared that her boss tried to demote her after she expressed that she needed help keeping up with her workload.

According to the user, the boss “pulls me into his office and goes, ‘We don’t really think you’re a good fit for this position, but you’re a bright young lady, and we’d hate to lose you. I’m giving you the option to stay and be my secretary. You have until 7 am tomorrow to decide.”

She quit, of course, but as it turns out, she’s the only person in the county certified to do her job.

The boss immediately backpedaled.

“He asked if I could stay 2 more weeks to train a new person, and I told him no. What if we paid you a consultation fee? No. But you’re the only person in the county certified! Should have thought of that earlier,” she shrugged.

I love quitting stories where the boss immediately realizes their terrible mistakes.

I’m Keeping the Apron

Workers at a luxury French Cafe received fancy aprons as part of their uniform. One user said they quit after dealing with a horrible manager, but kept the apron.

“One day, he pulled me off the floor (where I earned tips as a server) and made me polish silver for hours. He kept returning & throwing every second piece back at me, telling me to do it over. Kept saying “missed a spot,” the user shared, highlighting the awful way the manager treated them.

“So I walked out . . . and kept the apron. I kept the beautiful black apron with the embroidered logo and still wear it when I cook today,” they said.

The user added that the owner begged them to return, but they refused. On the way out, they told the user that the manager wasn’t cut out to lead.

We hope the owner took that final tip to heart.

Leaving a Tip

One user shared that after they were wrongfully dismissed, they charged a massive amount of money on their not-yet-disabled company card

“Took the taxi home after being wrongfully dismissed,” they shared. “Tipped the taxi drive $250 on company expense.”

Companies should revoke access to accounts immediately after letting someone go; when they don’t, they can find themselves with unexpected costs.

It’s illegal in the US to take these charges off someone’s paycheck, so their only recourse would be legal action, which is often more costly than it’s worth.

While we totally understand why the user did this, we don’t recommend quitting in such a way that you could face legal action.

Refusing to Accept Unpaid Training

Companies do everything they can to get free work from people.

A small family-owned restaurant went so far as to say new staff had to work for free while they were in training (note – not legal in the US!).

The new employee found out during a conversation with the owners after two hard days on the job.

They asked about payday, and reported the conversation:

“So, how does payday work here? Is it weekly, bi-weekly, or what?”

“You are on training, if we like the job you do, we will hire you with pay.”

Confused, I ask, “So you’re saying that you’re not going to pay me for cleaning years’ worth of mold, grease, and bathroom stains?

“No, you will be paid for work once your training is done.”

“F*** this, I quit!”

The user didn’t say, but we hope he reported this restaurant to the labor department and received back pay for the days worked.

FU Pay Me

Companies love wage compression, but they don’t realize that it always hurts their bottom line in the end.

One worker at a tire store said that after another tech was fired and the lead was out with an injury, they became the most knowledgeable person in the shop.

The company decided to give the new guy without much experience a raise instead.

The skilled worker put in their notice, leaving the tire shop without any employees capable of doing diagnostic work.

We hope it destroyed their bottom line.

Illegal and Horrifying

One young woman shared a horrifying encounter she had with her middle-aged managers at a pizza parlor.

She overheard the 40-year-old boss talking to the other (male) drivers about throwing her a birthday party and spiking her drink so they could “do things” to her. She was turning 18 at the time.

Thank goodness she overheard and quit on the spot. We hope she reported it.

When Bosses Back Bad Customers

A good boss will have their employees’ backs. A bad boss will throw a worker under the bus in a heartbeat to appease the rudest customers imaginable.

That’s what happened to a server at a crowded restaurant. The poster spent hours accommodating a large group of over 20 guests, bringing them drinks, refills, apps, the whole nine yards.

Everything was fantastic, until the check came. Suddenly, the table transformed into a gaggle of Karens, demanding to see the manager over every perceived mistake.

Of course, the manager backed the guests, comping their meals and berating the server, who received a paltry $12 tip for the hours of work.

They quit on the spot, but we doubt anything happened to this horrible boss.

I’m Taking My Vacation

Bosses think they have complete control of workers’ free time. For some reason, a vacation notice became a “request” that power-tripping bosses gleefully deny.

One worker requested time off in the spring at the beginning of the year. The boss approved it in writing, but of course, that was months ago.

When the time actually came, they were scheduled to work every day. So of course, they went to the boss, thinking it was just a misunderstanding.

Nope.

The boss literally ripped up the request right in front of the worker’s face, saying, “We don’t have enough people, so you’re going to have to make some sacrifices. You’re just going to have to deal with it.”

“No, you’re going to have to make the sacrifice,” replied the worker, saying they’re going on their trip and also giving notice. During those two weeks, the boss begged him to stay, but also tried retaliating in petty ways, so the worker decided to leave a day early, despite being scheduled.

The poor boss had to make some sacrifices and work extra.

Micromanaging the Clock in

What happens if you don’t clock in at exactly the right time?

We all know companies loathe workers who clock in early, so one employee decided to use the restroom before clocking in, resulting in a one-minute delay.

The manager lost it. The worker said it wasn’t the first time his boss blew a gasket over something so small, but it was the last time he was going to deal with it.

He quit right there, but not before reporting the boss to human resources.

Guess who was fired next week?

You Will Pay the OT You Owe

Companies love taking advantage of teenagers. They’re usually working a first job,  haven’t yet learned how to navigate toxic work environments, and can’t tell when they’re being treated unfairly.

A restaurant tried, but thankfully, this worker’s father had his back.

The manager kept forcing them to cover shifts, making them work from 8:30 in the morning to 9:00 at night (already not cool for a teenager!).

They didn’t feel like they were earning enough for the amount of work, so they quit.

At first, Dad was mad – you don’t just up and quit your job! But after reviewing the pay stubs, he realized there was a valid reason: the restaurant wasn’t paying overtime.

Dad made his son go back and demand back pay for all the missed overtime. He did, bringing the paystubs as receipts. The crying manager paid up, begged him not to report the company to the Better Business Bureau, and he agreed, but his father made no such promise.

Reported.
