A vision board is a display that illustrates your vision for life. It can be as general as a life wish list or targeted on a specific goal – like traveling to a bucket list destination or scoring your dream job.

It’s a visual reminder of what you want and what it takes to achieve it.

What Do I Need to Make a Vision Board?

Before making your vision board, you must decide whether you want a virtual or physical display. There are pros and cons to each.

Virtual Vision Board

A virtual vision board is great because you don’t need any special supplies. Lots of programs allow you to create it online for free.

However, the problem with a virtual vision board is that it’s far too easy to make and forget.

Though creating your virtual vision board is part of the fun, if you don’t spend time looking at it every day, it won’t work as intended.

Virtual Vision Board Supplies

If you’re set on a virtual board, all you need is a computer (or smartphone) and an app that lets you make the board.

I love Canva for virtual vision boards. You can start for free, but you may need to pay for Canva Pro to use all the images.

Although you can create your own vision board from scratch, you can also choose from a variety of pre-made templates.

Open the app, click the (+) button to create a design, and search for “mood board” to find a template you like. Then, use the elements feature on the left-hand side of the screen to search for items to add.

If you want, you can even have Canva print and ship your completed vision board!

Physical Vision Board

I prefer physical vision boards because crafting them is half the fun, and I can hang my board anywhere in my house so I can see it every day.

However, you’ll need a lot more stuff to create your perfect vision board if you go the physical route.

You’ll need plenty of crafting supplies to make your perfect physical vision board.

From deciding on the base to finding perfect images, affixing them to your board, and adding flair, we’ve got you covered with everything you will need.

Base

First, you must decide on a base. The two best options are posterboard and corkboard.

Posterboard is cheaper and comes in a variety of colors, offering an instant background if you want. It also provides more adhesive options.

Corkboard is more expensive, but I love the visual aesthetic it provides. It looks polished and professional. However, I don’t use cork because I don’t want to use thumbtacks.

Magazines

Magazines provide a wide range of images for your vision board. You’ll find pictures of exotic locations, bold, powerful words, great food pictures, and fitness inspiration in magazine pages.

You don’t have to pay top dollar for a brand new magazine. Head to your favorite used book store and browse their periodicals section. Many offer old magazines for sale that are perfect for vision boards.

Writing Implements

Some people would rather write inspirational phrases on their vision boards than cut them out of a magazine.

If that’s you – you need something to write with. Permanent markers are ideal – they’re bold and come in a variety of colors. But they’re also permanent, so if you make a mistake, you’re stuck with it.

I like to trace my words in pencil before committing with marker. When I have them just write, I’ll go over it with marker, and either erase or cover up the pencil marks.

Scrapbook Paper

When I make vision boards, I use white posterboard as the base and cover it with decorative scrapbook paper.

You don’t need to do this, but I enjoy having the different layers on my board. I also tend to pick scrapbook paper with imagery relating to my vision – like a mountain landscape for an adventure vision board or stars for a life goals board.

Photos

Some people like to include photographs on their vision boards. Perhaps you visited a dream destination and want to live there someday, or gained weight in the past few years and want to get back in shape.

You can use your old photos as a reminder of your goal.

Scissors

If you’re using craft paper or magazines, you’ll probably need scissors to cut your materials out. Scissors will also help you size any photos correctly to fit your vision.

The right scissors matter. I’ve used crafting scissors that have too-small handles, and my hand cramps so badly that I can’t cut out all my magazine images. Get scissors designed for paper crafts that are comfortable to grip.

Adhesive

How will you get your materials to stick to your vision board? If you’re using cork, you may need to use thumbtacks. I don’t like using thumbtacks because I’m always afraid I’ll drop one without noticing and find out the hard way one day. I also have cats, who may think a random dropped thumbtack is a fun toy.

If you’re using posterboard, you can use glue or washi tape. I like to use a cheap glue stick to get the image on the board, then add some washi tape to the edges. The tape adds some flair but also ensures the image doesn’t curl up on the unglued edges.

Flair

To personalize your vision board even more, you have to add flair!

I’m obsessed with stickers, so my vision boards all get covered with any sticker I can find that matches the aesthetic.

Flair could also include glitter, drawings, ephemera, Post-it notes, or anything else that would look great on your board. There’s no limit to what you can add as long as you can attach it to your board.

Hanging Supplies

Once you create your board, you need a way to hang it. If you opt for cork, you’ll likely need a hanging kit (with wire and nails) to safely affix it to the perfect spot.

If you use posterboard, you can probably get it to stay on the wall with tape, but those Velcro wall-hanging strips are probably a better solution.

Some of the Velcro strips can carry a hefty load, so the heavy-duty ones may work for corkboard as well.

Where to Get Vision Board Supplies?

Hey folks! Transparency Disclosure- Some of the links in this article are affiliate links. That means I’ll receive a small commission if you decide to click on it and buy something. Don’t worry, it doesn’t cost you anything extra!

Outside of old magazines, as we discussed, you can get your vision board supplies at most craft stores.

I prefer to shop at local, independent stores because I want to support my local community. However, I also shop at independent online stores.

A Cherry on Top has tons of great crafting supplies for reasonable prices. Some of their offerings are a little cutesy, so if you prefer sleeker supplies, check out Blick Art Materials – a wonderful family-owned art store that donates art supplies to under-funded schools.
