What do you want most in the world? Did you know that the law of attraction will help you get it?
You might be thinking that the law of attraction is a bunch of baloney and has no place on a finance blog. But, one of the greatest finance books of all time, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, is kind of based on this idea! The law of attraction can help you manifest money if used correctly.
Some call the law of attraction pseudoscience. They say it’s new-age mumbo jumbo that doesn’t really do anything for anyone. Read this with an open mind. You may be surprised to learn that this law can work for some people.

What Exactly is the Law of Attraction?
The law of attraction is the idea that the universe will give you what you ask for. However, it’s not as simple as just asking; you must attract what you want. This means that not only do you have to put out conscious, positive thoughts about what you want, but your subconscious also has to want this thing and act as you deserve it.
With the law of attraction, you can’t ask for a million dollars and expect a million dollars to be deposited into your bank account. You have to change your entire mindset to attract the money you want and the lifestyle you desire.
Is the Law of Attraction True?
There is no scientific evidence that that the law of attraction is true. But there’s also no scientific evidence for many things that we believe, and that doesn’t always make them untrue, does it?
The law of attraction forces you to change your mindset, and changing your mindset often leads to changes in your life. So yes, in that way, it is true.
How Does the Law of Attraction Work?
The law of attraction works by unlocking the power of the subconscious mind. It forces you to put all of your energy, both conscious and subconscious, into your goal. The law celebrates mindfulness and promotes the idea that putting your entire being into something will help you achieve it.
In a way, it does work. It is true that if you completely focus on a certain thing, you will probably get that thing. If you put in the time and effort to lose weight, barring any medical problems, you will lose weight.
However, it’s not magic. The law is about a mindset change, which will change your behaviors. It does not account for obstacles or anything that is outside of our control.
If your goal is to have a million dollars, the law of attraction can help you achieve it, but it won’t magically deposit the money into your account. Instead, using the law, you will put positive thoughts about having a million dollars out into the universe. This means you will constantly visualize yourself earning the money, figuring out how to make it, imagining what you’d do with it. If you are constantly thinking about this goal in a positive way, you are more than likely going to start taking steps to achieve it. You will start that side hustle, put in for that promotion at work, or cut your spending to align yourself with your goals.
These things will happen because you changed your mindset when you focused your intentions on your goal, putting the positive thoughts of achieving it into the universe. You made yourself truly believe it was possible, and you started acting like it was possible.
The Law of Attraction and Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs are things we tell ourselves that prevent us from achieving our goals. They are reasons and excuses as to why we can’t do something. Often, these beliefs are only in our heads, and if we pushed past them or thought about the problem differently, we’d find that we can overcome it.
However, many of us stop trying at the limiting belief. We don’t believe we can do something, so we don’t even try.
This isn’t to say that some of our limiting beliefs aren’t accurate. There are indeed some struggles that can’t be overcome. Many people will say that escaping poverty is as easy as a mindset change (which is basically the law of attraction), but that’s just not true. There are political and social issues beyond our control that keep people trapped in poverty. No amount of positive thinking will change these societal problems. While it’s true that some people have the support, fortitude, and good fortune to escape this trap, many others don’t, and it’s not their fault. We need far more than a mindset change to help the least fortunate among us.
This disclaimer is significant because we need to acknowledge that not everyone can do this. However, many people can. And these are the folks I’m talking to – those who are holding themselves back with their own personal limiting beliefs.
Overcoming Limiting Beliefs
Overcoming limiting beliefs sometimes means changing our entire belief system. This is where the power of a positive mindset comes into play. Stop thinking you can’t and start thinking you can. I know it seems easy when I say it that way, but the reality is not as cut and dry. However, there are tools to help you achieve this.
Journaling
Journaling can help you identify your limiting beliefs and help you figure where they came from. Writing in a journal is a great self-care activity and can help you reflect upon your inner desires and challenges.
Sometimes it’s hard to get started with journaling. Journal prompts can help with that. We have a set of 75 introspective journaling prompts available on our Etsy store that can help you get into the habit of journaling about your inner thoughts. These aren’t specifically designed with the Law of Attraction in mind, but they can be the first step on your path to self-discovery.
If you already general regularly, consider journaling specifically for the Law of Attraction. Manifestation journaling is a great way to show the universe what you want, and keep track of your desires for yourself.
Affirmations
Affirmations are daily sayings that help us change our inner beliefs and subconscious mind. An example of an affirmation might be “I am worthy” or “I am happy where I am.” These are statements of fact. The point is to get the message, whatever it may be, to the subconscious mind.
Sometimes we have limiting beliefs based on self-esteem. We don’t think we’re good enough. This is usually deeply rooted in our subconscious. To change that, we need to tell our subconscious, every day, that it is wrong. That we are worthy, that we are good enough, that we are deserving. When we use daily affirmations, we are telling our subconscious the truth every day. Eventually, the message will sink in, and we will realize that we really are worthy.
An affirmation is like a daily mantra. We tell ourselves we are capable, worthy, good enough, and our minds will start to believe it.
Setting Intentions
Intentions are things that we are going to accomplish. They aren’t something that we’re going to try to do, like a to-do list. They are things that we will do. It’s fact, not “maybe if I get to it.”
Intentions aren’t for chores. You won’t set an intention of getting the dishes done. Instead, your intention should be related to how you will face the day and behave.
One of my favorite intentions to set is “I will do my best today.” Every day, I face the day, and I try. I give my best. My intention is to face the day with positivity and get done what I can get done.
Affirmations versus Intentions
The difference between affirmations versus intentions is small but important. Affirmations are about what you are. They are “I am” statements. Intentions are about what you will do. They are “I will” statements.
Both are important. Having both daily affirmations and intentions will help you think positively and help you be happier with your life overall.
Vision Boards
Vision boards are great tools to help you visualize the law of attraction. They help you overcome your limiting beliefs by showing you what is possible.
Everyone’s vision board will be different. It’s based on your own personal goals, dreams, and desires. But looking at it every day, adding to it every day, will help you visualize what you really want. This visualization will help you set your subconscious to achieving it.
Therapy
Sometimes we can’t overcome our limiting beliefs on our own. Many of us have deep-rooted trauma, and no amount of journaling or affirmations will help. If that’s the case, I recommend therapy. A good therapist can help you understand how your trauma affects your self-worth and can offer tools to help you overcome it.
What are the Laws of Attraction?
When researching how the law of attraction works, you may have come across many posts on the 3 laws of attraction, or 7 laws of attraction, or even 12 laws of attraction.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find information on whether there are 3, or 7, or 12. This is what happens when a new age law is discussed and written about; there is no actual standard to it.
But that’s the beauty of it as well. People take what they want and can use and leave behind the parts they don’t need.
I did, however, do some research on the most common laws, the 3, 7, and 12, so you can understand what they are and how they relate to one another.
What are the 3 Laws of Attraction?
The three laws of attraction are not exactly laws, but they are ideas to help the law of attraction work for you. These are:
Like Attracts Like
Nature Abhors a Vacuum
The Present is Always Perfect
Like Attracts Like
Like attracts like is the easiest for us to wrap our heads around. They say that you are what you eat and that the people you surround yourself with are a reflection of yourself, right? Well, these things are true. But you have the power to change these things. Stop eating fatty, unhealthy foods. Ditch your toxic friends and join communities of like-minded individuals. Surround yourself with people and things that embody what you want, which will help you achieve it.
Nature Abhors a Vacuum
Nothing happens on its own. Everything in life, in nature, is interconnected. This means that nothing in your life exists in a vacuum, either. If you want to make changes in one aspect of your life, you may have to change other aspects as well. Declutter to give yourself more room to grow. Reflect on how certain areas of your life are related, and see how making changes in one can affect another.
The Present is Always Perfect
I get it; you’re looking around and thinking, “this is really far from perfect.” However, trying to make it better and closer to perfect helps unlock the positive thinking mindset. Think of it like setting intentions. We all know nothing is perfect, but if you set an intention to behave as if it’s perfect, you will be more positive overall, and this can help you develop a complete mindset shift.
What are the 7 Laws of Attraction?
The seven laws of attraction are the ones we most commonly see. I consider these the real laws of attraction! The 7 Laws of attraction are:
The Law of Manifestation
The Law of Magnetism
The Law of Unwavering Desire
The Law of Delicate Balance
The Law of Harmony
The Law of Right Action
The Law of Universal Influence
The Law of Manifestation
The law of manifestation is the basic premise of the law of attraction. This law states that your desires will manifest into reality. However, it doesn’t say anything about whether that’s good or bad. In fact, even negative thoughts and desires manifest into reality. If you think you will fail at something, you most likely will fail. The law of attraction asks you to use this law and manifest good things rather than bad things.
The Law of Magnetism
This is basically a rehash of the like attracts like law from above. Magnetism is about attraction. Our vibes and our energy attracts certain energy. Therefore, we need to be conscious of the energy we are putting out into the universe to only attract what we want to attract.
The Law of Unwavering Desire
This law says that we have to want something badly enough to get it. It’s about total, complete, unwavering commitment. The law of unwavering desire is about dedication. If you aren’t dedicated to your goals, it will be harder to achieve them.
The Law of Delicate Balance
Balance is about finding peace and happiness in what you already have so that you aren’t desperate to get what you want. Manifesting what you want never comes from desperation. It comes from abundance. Practice gratitude, show thankfulness for what you have and consider anything extra a blessing.
The Law of Harmony
The Law of Harmony is similar to the idea that nature abhors a vacuum. Everything in your life, surroundings, and nature, in general, are connected, and these things need to be in harmony. For the law of attraction to work, you need to be in harmony with yourself, your desires, and your environment.
The Law of Right Action
For the law of attraction to work, you need to be a good person. The law is all about manifesting good things out of positive thoughts, but positive actions are the best way to put positive energy out into the universe.
The Law of Universal Influence
Your thoughts, actions, and intentions influence the world, even if you can’t see it. Think about the difference between a happy person entering a room and an angry person entering a room. How different does the room feel? Expand this idea to the entire universe. That energy has an influence, so try to make it a positive influence.
What are the 12 Laws of Attraction?
There are not 12 laws of attraction. You may see this question asked, but it is really talking about the 12 laws of the universe, of which the law of attraction is one. You can find information on the 12 laws of the universe here.
Using the Law of Attraction
After reading through the 7 laws of attraction, you probably have a good idea of how and why it works, right? It’s not about just asking the universe for something and receiving it. It’s far more complex than that. It’s about changing your entire lifestyle to manifest positive energy. And although it sounds like hokey nonsense when said that way, it’s actually very straightforward.
All of these laws are about being a good person, appreciating what you have, and surrounding yourself with positivity. These are the basic tenets behind a ton of religious teachings and abundance mindset coaching programs alike.
These ideas are popular and everywhere because they work. If you surround yourself with positive people and learn to appreciate what you have, you will be happier overall. And if you are happier overall, you will have the confidence to go after what you want. You will believe that you deserve it because you do! And your positive mindset will help you achieve it.
Applying the Laws to Your Own Life
Now it’s time to apply the law of attraction to your own life. First, let go of any negativity that you might be carrying. Forgive, not for them, but for you. Let it go and move on with your life. This might even include distancing yourself from toxic friends or family members, and that’s okay. You need to do what is best for you.
Next, surround yourself with positivity. Join groups, either online or in-person, that offer support and encouragement for your goals. Set daily positive affirmations to help you feel better about yourself. Think positive thoughts, not only about the future but about the present as well. Stop worrying about what could go wrong, and start thinking about what could go right.
Finally, ask the universe for what you want. Put the thoughts and energy out there that you deserve it. The power of attraction works when you truly believe it will work and truly believe that you deserve it to work. So believe it. Put in the work to get it. Turn your scarcity mindset into an abundance mindset, and attract abundance.
When you start to change these things, you will change your life. You will start to notice that good things are happening more than bad things. Embrace the good things. Show gratitude for them, and the universe will keep them coming!
The law of attraction isn’t a guarantee. It’s a behavioral shift that will help you achieve your goals. Similar systems have worked for millions of people throughout time, so what are you waiting for? Change the way you think, change the way you behave, and manifest your dreams!
The 7 laws get a bit much for me to take in tbh, but I mainly focus on the thoughts and feelings + the commitment with detachment.
I really didn’t start to get on board until I read about the reticular activating system and was then was like YES, okay, I can see the logic and practical mechanics here!
