It’s hard not to overreact when we feel slighted or disrespected, but controlling your emotions under pressure is an essential life skill.

We’ve all seen videos of grown adults reacting poorly to everything, from a restaurant not serving a specific dish to being turned down for a date.

Don’t be like this. Learn to keep your composure when things don’t go your way. People will respect you more, and you’ll like yourself better.

Cooking

Your mother isn’t always going to be around to make your food, so you need to learn how to do it yourself.

Learning to cook various nutritious meals is essential for a healthy life. Learn how to prepare grilled chicken, steamed vegetables, roasts, and casseroles.

For a bonus skill, keep a handful of specialty dishes in your repertoire for hosting parties

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is one of the vital life skills we assume everyone knows, but unfortunately, a lot of people struggle to keep their homes and themselves clean.

Adults should be able to keep their homes tidy. They should know how to handle basic personal hygiene, like showering, brushing teeth, and hand washing.

This type of basic cleanliness is vital to health and wellness, and it doesn’t take a lot of effort.

Dedicate a few minutes daily to chores like dishes and cleaning the counter, and schedule a deeper cleaning of floors and toilets once a week.

Adaptability

Nothing stays the same forever. As adults, we need to understand that things change, and we need to be able to adapt to those changes.

When I was traveling through Peru, I booked a scenic overnight bus tour to take me from Cusco to Puno. The bus never showed up. After some digging, I learned the road was closed, and all bus services were cancelled indefinitely.

But I didn’t freak out; instead, I headed to the airport and booked a last-minute flight. My ability to adapt to change saved my trip.

Functioning on Little Sleep

Far too many adults are sleep deprived. While the real life skill is learning to manage your sleep schedule to prevent sleep deprivation, sometimes life leaves us little choice.

New parents are constantly woken by their babies. Cat owners know the struggle of 3 am zoomies. People on call must wake at all hours to solve work problems.

If your life interrupts your sleep schedule, you must learn how to function with less sleep.

Time Management

We all have 24 hours in a day, and most of us have so much to do that it doesn’t seem like enough.

Learning how to manage the time you have is crucial to success. There are a ton of time management techniques that can help. You’ll be astonished at how much you can accomplish when you pay more attention to the time you have.

Communication

Far too many people lack the most vital life skill in human society: communication.

Our world revolves around communication, yet far too many people can’t even form a complete sentence. If you want to be taken seriously, especially in professional environments, you must learn basic grammar and sentence structure.

If you want a happy life, you must learn how to communicate with others, both orally and in writing. Actively listen to what other people are saying and respond appropriately.

Showing Up

Adults must do things they don’t want. We can no longer skip work to hang out with friends; we have bills to pay and responsibilities to manage.

But showing up is a vital skill for far more than work. Society has become so individualistic that we no longer show up for each other. We don’t help our friends when they’re in need. We don’t vote or support our communities.

More people need to show up when it matters.

Resilience

Life’s not fair. It never was, it never will be.

You could spend all your time lamenting the unfairness of it all, or you could pick yourself up and try anyway.

Resilience helps us persevere despite the odds and triumph in the face of adversity. It’s the life skill that helps us keep going, no matter how hard things get. And usually, the people who keep going are the ones who win.

Critical Thinking

We know from scrolling Facebook that many adults lack critical thinking skills. The conspiracy theories some folks share, believing to be true, boggle the mind.

Many people don’t even realize how much their inability to think critically about events holds them back. They believe everything they see without question, and usually, it’s specifically designed to cause an emotional reaction. They buy into the righteous indignation of the day and make things worse for everyone.

Empathy

Empathy is the most underrated yet vital life skill that’s severely lacking in the world. Empathy is simply understanding how other people feel, yet some go so far as to call it a sin!

The world needs more empathy, not less. We need to make an effort to understand each other’s positions and perspectives. When we solve problems with empathy, we can find solutions that work for everyone.

Interpersonal Skills

Humans are social creatures that thrive with community. Interpersonal skills help us build those communities.

Calling “interpersonal skills” one of the top life skills you should master is a bit of a cheat, because the word encompasses a wide range of skills, from teamwork to self-awareness, and some skills that are so crucial we included them here too (communication, empathy).

Discover all the interpersonal skills you should develop to thrive socially.
