21 Green Flag Hobbies that Signal a Healthy Mindset

We discussed the red flag hobbies that immediately turn people off at length, so it’s only fair that we balance it out with the green flag hobbies that draw people in.

Discover the top green flag hobbies to try if you want to be a better person.

What Are Green Flag Hobbies?

A green flag hobby is something that quietly tells people you’re safe to be around.  They signal traits like cooperativeness, kindness, and creativity, while making you a more interesting, well-rounded person.

If you want a new hobby that won’t turn people off, try one of these.

Volunteering

Committing to volunteer work is the greenest green flag hobby imaginable. It shows passion, caring, and empathy.

The best part is, there are thousands of ways to volunteer, matching nearly any interest. Try socializing cats at the local shelter, packaging meals at a food bank, or signing up to mentor a child with Big Brother Big Sister.

As a bonus, you’ll meet like-minded people and gain new skills.

Reading

People who love reading are typically open-minded, intelligent, and interesting. Books help us understand different perspectives, enhance creativity, and give us something to talk about.

An advantage to reading is that you can do it for free. Head to your local library and check out something new. Give new genres a chance.

Expand your mind with the magic of books.

Journaling

Journaling is a green flag hobby because it showcases your self-awareness. Journaling helps with introspection, emotional regulation, and mental wellness. People who journal can typically manage their emotions without making it someone else’s problem.

Not all journaling is about introspection, but the other journaling benefits, like creativity, productivity, and organization, will also make you a better person.

Hiking

There’s nothing better than taking a hike out on a beautiful trail to be one with nature for a while. If hiking is your hobby, others will think you’re energetic, capable, and a good steward of nature.

Hiking can also be a social hobby. Outdoorsy areas have hike groups you can join, so you can hit the trails together and make new friends while enjoying the gorgeous views.

Recreational Sports

Enjoying recreational or community sports indicates that you’re a team player who enjoys a little friendly competition.

You don’t even have to be good at the sport. I played in a recreational softball league even though I can barely hit the ball. My (lack of) skills didn’t matter; the fact that I cheered my team on and gave it my all was enough.

Playing an Instrument

You need dedication to learn an instrument, which makes it a top green flag hobby. If you took the time to learn the notes, positioning, and intricacies of your chosen instrument, you’re probably patient, committed, and focused.

As a bonus, some instruments are just cool. People who can bust out the guitar or harmonica around the campfire inject great entertainment into social gatherings. But don’t go too far with it; nobody likes the guy who insists on playing at every party.

Writing

Writers are smart and creative. They’re great with words and open to new ideas.

In theory, their love of the written word should make them excellent communicators, and if they can write complex emotional scenes, they should be able to handle emotions in real life, too.

Someone who enjoys writing makes a great friend or partner because they’re usually thoughtful, detail-oriented, and caring.

Painting

Most people marvel at a painter’s impressive talent. It is a great conversation started, making people want to learn more about you.

Artists are creative, imaginative, and sometimes intense. They care so much about their work, a trait that often bleeds into their everyday life.

A drawback to painting is the starving artist stereotype that hangs over your head. However, that mostly applies to professional artists. Enjoying painting as a hobby is almost always a green flag.

DIY

Having a passion for DIY highlights a willingness to work on things rather than throw them away. It also suggests an ability to learn new things and a frugal mindset.

People with a DIY hobby make attractive partners, because if anything goes wrong, they can fix it. That’s a huge turn on.

Woodworking

Woodworkers must be patient and safety-oriented. As a bonus, they make really cool things!

As far as green flag hobbies go, I think this is the most impressive one. It shows you can work with your hands, that you’re committed to a job well done, and that you know your way around power tools.

Maybe I only find it that impressive because I didn’t put any skill points in physical intelligence, but either way, I consider it a massive green flag.

Cooking or Baking

If your favorite hobby keeps people’s bellies full, they will love you forever. The cooking friend always gets invites to potlucks, and the baker is the office’s favorite person.

It ranks as one of the top green flag hobbies because feeding people shows you care. It makes people think you’re nurturing and safe.

As a bonus, potential friends and partners will know that you won’t want to spend all your money going out to eat, which, in this economy, is more crucial than ever.

Book Club

Enjoying a book club hobby has all the benefits of reading, with the added bonus of knowing how to be social.

Book club participants are thoughtful, intelligent, and well-read. But they can also think critically about literature, understand opposing viewpoints, and hold thoughtful debates.

They make the best friends.

Birding

Bird enthusiasts love the outdoors and are passionate about nature. They’re open to travel and adventure, especially if there’s the potential to see a new species.

They also have great memories (and can probably tell you all about each type of bird!) and a caring nature. The only downside is that you’ll probably be helping them nurture baby birds, but I’d be okay with that.

Puzzles

Putting puzzles together takes patience. People who enjoy this green flag hobby are usually calm, quiet, and thoughtful. There’s also a cooperative aspect when you work on puzzles together.

It’s the perfect hobby for cozy nights inside.

Board Games

Board games offer a mix of great entertainment and good people. It’s a social hobby that doesn’t involve drinking or spending a lot of money, meaning people who enjoy it know how to have a good time without busting their budget.

It’s also just…fun. Games are fun. People who enjoy board games are usually charismatic, optimistic, and friendly.

Thrifting

Why buy new when you can thrift? As a hobby, it suggests that you’re thrifty (obviously!) but also that you appreciate older things. You can find the value in things others throw away, and that’s a fantastic trait.

But thrifting is often more than finding a good deal. A lot of people look for treasures to transform via upcycling or DIY.  Thrifting this way is also a green flag, suggesting creativity and willingness to put in hard work to make something shine.

Gardening

Cultivating a beautiful outdoor space shows that you enjoy nature, have a nurturing side, and don’t shy away from hard work.

People who garden also tend to be patient, as it takes a long time for the fruits of their labor to grow.

Sewing, knitting, and crocheting are all green flag hobbies that indicate a willingness to repair broken things, the ability to work with your hands, and a splash of creativity.

Friends will love the blankets, scarves, and hats you make for their birthdays, and potential partners will appreciate your frugal nature.

Astronomy

Our planet is just a tiny rock floating among a vast universe. People who appreciate that and long to explore the galaxy around us are often thoughtful, logical, and willing to learn.

Really, any scientific hobby is likely a green flag. It highlights that you want to explore the world around you and understand how things work.

Coaching

A person who spends their free time coaching others is usually helpful, kind, and a great communicator.

They’re also team players, willing to pitch in and give a hand whenever it’s needed.

Of course, some coaches can get too into it – it’s a hobby that can turn into a red flag if you only care about winning.

Fitness

A casual fitness hobby is a green flag because it shows that you care about your health and wellness. People who take care of their bodies often have great willpower, are dedicated, and enjoy a challenge.

It’s also a green flag because you know they will have the energy to keep up with whatever you want to do.

Anything You Truly Love

Any hobby, from building model trains to flying kites, can be a green flag. It’s not so much the hobby that determines whether others will see it as off-putting or not, but the way you talk about it and engage with it.

When you love something for its sake, it shows in the way you talk about it. You want to share it with others and have fun doing it. That makes it a green flag, no matter what it is!

When Green Flag Hobbies Turn Into Red Flags

Even the greenest flag hobbies can be detrimental to your health, wellness, and relationships. For example, Fitness is a great hobby, but if you spend all your free time at the gym and obsess about macros, it morphs into a red flag.

Like anything, moderation is key. Any hobby can be a green flag as long as you balance it with everything else in your life.

Enjoy Your Hobbies!

Whether your hobby is a green flag or red flag, beloved or hated, who cares?

The only thing that matters is whether you enjoy it. Do it because you love it, not because of what other people think, and you’ll be much happier in life.
